“We live in fear of the rain.”

In the Kano Plains of Kisumu, the soil is “Black Cotton”—a clay that swells and traps water. Every rainy season, the Nyando River bursts its banks.

For the Orongo Women’s & Orphans’ Village, this isn’t just about wet feet. It’s a health crisis.

The Threat: Traditional pit latrines fill with floodwater, collapsing and spreading raw sewage into the living areas.

The Risk: Cholera and typhoid outbreaks become a yearly terror, while the same floodwaters drive venomous snakes—cobras and black mambas—into the camp.

The Heartbreak: Our elderly “Gogos” (grandmothers) are forced to climb muddy, slippery mounds just to reach a toilet. They deserve dignity, not danger.

The Solution: A raised, flood-proof sanitation block—built on a concrete plinth above the waterline, with safe ramps instead of muddy mounds, so our Gogos can move with ease and dignity, even in the rainy season.

THE ENGINEERING: What We Are Building

With the help of sanitation experts, we have designed a Dual-Unit Biodigester System specifically for this flood zone.

  • 🚫 Flood-Proof Technology:
    Raised Architecture: Toilets are elevated 60cm (3 steps) above the ground, keeping them dry even during peak floods.

    Sealed Biodigesters: Unlike old pits, these watertight concrete tanks digest waste biologically. No leaks. No groundwater contamination.

  • ♿ Dignity for the Elderly:

    The “Gogo” Suite: We are installing US-Style Flush Toilets with concrete ramps and steel grab bars. No more squatting in pain. No more climbing steps.

  • 🛡️ 10-Year Sustainability Plan:

    Your donation doesn’t just build it; it maintains it. We have budgeted for a 10-Year Plus Maintenance Fund to cover daily cleaning, repairs, and security.

TRANSPARENCY & TRUST

Where does the money go? This project is executed by Positiviti Foundation. We believe in radical transparency.

  • 25% Risk Reserve: Kisumu’s “Black Cotton” soil is notorious for trapping trucks. We have budgeted for transport delays and rain contingencies so the project never stops.

  • Local Labor: We employ local Kisumu masons, putting money back into the community.

  • Government Approved: Our designs are compliant with NEMA and Kisumu County Public Health standards.

  • Long term employment. We will employ local people to maintain the latrines everyday. By creating a long term endowment for maintenance we ensure the system will last for decades
